Laura, dear, we three are in much agreement with you. Tonight WAS horrible. I think the contrast with last week partly illuminates the disparities between the superior music of the fifties and the schlocky music of today. Luke sagely points out, however, that the music of the fifties has had fifty years to sort the good from the bad. Sorta like how we think post-and-beam houses are superior because all the ones that fell down aren't around anymore.
The performances didn't bother me as much tonight as the music did, with the exception of the two country songs. The other eight songs were trying to be the ultimate all-time song, stuffed with as much emoting and sweating and screaming and pretension as possible, and full of insipid lyrics that have no meaning (I've been upset by a woman? Have a drink, for crissakes.) I'll take the two country songs. Unpretentious, simple, melodic. Just songs, not events.
Why is it that Randy and Paula can have their say, but as soon as Simon opens his mouth, they interrupt him?
Elliot wasn't bobbing up and down, he was hip-hopping.
I only saw 4 performances, and 3 of them were uninspiring. I actually really liked Elliott's, not because I like the song but because it was remarkably difficult to sing well, which he did. Paris was dopey. I'm starting to think she was so good in her audition because she'd been practicing the song for 17 years. Bucky made a good case for him going home first. Chris made me regret picking him to win.
Laura, I like Taylor, too. He really loves his music and his enthusiasm is infectious.
Nobody here liked Paris's performance last night. But...
I think she's shown herself to be the most versatile of all the performers. She has sung many different styles nearly flawlessly, and always has a performance of one kind or another to boot. There are several other outstanding voices on the show, but they stick to the same style week after week. Catherine does ballads, Mandisa does belting soul/gospel/Aretha, Chris is in a rut, Elliott is top-notch but hasn't branched out, Kellie and Bucky are country, Ace is mopey-dopey. Lisa has tried different stuff, but, as Laura says, seems desperate. Taylor tries different stuff, too, but he's always Taylor.

I think Paris is the American Idol. FWIW.
