Waves of ice

It's been so cold on Nantucket lately that the harbor on the mainland side is frozen, and even on the ocean side, the water near the shore is freezing up.  Here are spectacular pictures taken by a photographer named Jonathan Nimerfroh of what waves look like when the ocean is in the process of freezing.  (Be sure to click on the small pictures below the text to see them full-sized.)  Amazing.

Snow

Caleb won't be impressed.  But the rest of you might like to see what things are like in Plymouth these days.  Somewhere under there is the driveway.  See Dad's truck, parked in the road, barely visible over the combined drifts and snowplow banks?  Tonight, in Norwich, it's currently 3 below.

A double birthday

We'd already named our baby girl Laura when we found out that she had arrived, by happy accident, on the the 119th birthday of another Laura.  Today, Google's celebrating the earlier Laura's birthday with this Google Doodle, and we're wishing the happiest of happy birthdays to our own.

Have a wonderful day, Laura Mae!

A milestone's approaching.

This Thursday, February 5, 2015 is the Tenth Anniversary of this blog.  The Tenth!  Things were very different ten years ago when this got started, and when I hesitantly started it one snowy Saturday, I never would have believed it would still be here ten years later.  I'm amazed.

I tried to come up with a creative contest or commemorative favorite-post-collection or something like that, but couldn't think of just the right thing.  Still, we can't let the day pass unnoticed, so here's my proposal.   If anyone --  a Murphy, a friend, a relative, an occasional visitor -- has anything to say on this Momentous Occasion -- a favorite post, a least-favorite post, thoughts about the blog's past, thoughts about its future, suggestions -- post them as comments on this post, or send them to me as email.  On Thursday I'll make an Anniversary Post and gather together your thoughts as well as mine.  Please do.  It's quieter around here than it used to be, but it isn't dead yet!
