The reason that the Pieta is behind that barrier is that somebody went after it with a sledgehammer not so long ago.
Dear me. The Pieta is weird. Michelangelo had to give Mary huge legs so that she wouldn't look dwarfed by Jesus on her lap. Mary kind of ends up looking like a giant.And it's a lot smaller than I thought it would be.
