American Idol's charm is in the early going when extraordinary singing comes from ordinary undiscovered people. "When he gets to the end, he wants to start all over again." Towards the end, "the starmaker machinery behind the popular song" takes over and weird things happen and everybody tries too hard and it seeems like the auditions held more hope and promise (The Audacity!) than was warranted.
Melinda, the most professionally accomplished singer in the group is eliminated, leaving Blake, who is kind of a sophisticated goober (he can form his mouth into a perfect circle while singing at the camera) and Jordin, a lovely raw talent, who was named after a calf who lives here on Stornaway Farm. Pictures provided upon request.
Even though Claire picked the top four (in any order), Arnold has clinched the win. Some people have said they aren't going to pay Arnold because they don't believe in him. I think this is sad and sour grapes.
Arnie, congratulations. I believe in you.
The Standings with two positions left:
Arnold 22
Scott 26

Tomson,
It's hard to believe that AI ended up this way. It was the little people in the beginning that made it so compelling and promising. Now that the best singers are gone I just find the show irritating. BUT, Go Jordin anyway and she has had some great singing moments.
Jordin spells her name wrong, sooo I'm pulling for the other one.
It's not that I object to paying someone who doesn't exist, it's that I think someone who doesn't exist should give their money to a charity of their choosing, like a charity that raises money for people that don't exist.
I agree with you about the way Jordin spells her name, but Caleb, spelling or no spelling, you can't root for Blake. That's just wrong. Don't do it!
As for a charity that raises money for people who don't exist, that would be imaginary children, right? I hear they have plenty of issues . . .
I'm missing the whole "paying someone who doesn't exist" reference. Was I out getting popcorn and beer??
Claire, get this. Certain members of my immediate family, specifically, the four members who are not me, believe that the person who comments here once in a while and is also the winner of the American Idol contest and is named Arnold is a figment of my imagination which (or is it that?) I created for the purpose of commenting on my blog posts because, so often, no one would.
Needless to say, this is distressing to both Arnie and me. Have you noticed that Arnie's comments have become less frequent? He told me he was looking for another blog where people would believe in him. Sigh.
The reference to "imaginary children" is a reference to "Flight OF The Conchords", which is a folk duo from New Zealand (they invented rap in NZ) that I discovered and have been promoting, with some assistance from Arnold. They go really good with popcorn and beer, and if you haven't seen the half-hour demo tape they made for me, I'll send you a copy.
Speaking of FOTC, I was innocently watching TV the other night when I saw a preview for their new tv show. They have a sitcom coming out on HBO. I'm not all that excited because I liked them in their original form, and I don't see how that will translate to a sitcom.
Hmm.
Tomson, Well if Arnie is imaginative in someone's mind, more power to whomever that may be. And it does seem Arnie has served his purpose. But the whole idea of not sending him money campaign doesn't seem right. Think of what he could do with that money to support global warming for instance, another imaginary idea. Surely he's thought of that. What is his address, how much do we owe him and more power to him. But how does it feel when bloggers are more likely to respond to an imaginary friend than to you. Man, that would take me years on the couch to work out and I already have too many issues.
You know Claire, Flight of the Conchords sing about issues, they might be able to help.
I see I'm still on top of the AI standings. I'm pretty awesome.
Hm. I think YOU'RE imaginary.
Claire, if you want to know more about the views of Flight of the Conchords on imaginary children and other issues, you can watch them here:

Think, think about it.
Doesn't Arnie want to weigh in on this? I sense you're ganging up on me but maybe that's one of my issues.
