John Stossel: 1$ Per Week Private Schools in Poor Countries

Parents with next to nothing in places like Ghana and India prefer to spend 1$ a week to send their kids to the local private school rather than the free government schools.

Watch

"The Obama Administration can envision a world without the internal combustion engine but not one without the Chrysler Corporation."

This George Will speech is both hilarious and brilliant.

"No one washes a rental car."

Big Gummint

In New York State, if you want to start a business that provides personal care to older people struggling to stay in their homes safely and comfortably, you must get a license. The State thinks it has a responsibility to ensure the safety of such people seeking services from such a business. Fine. Give me a license and then I will endeavor to provide seniors with the assistance they need to stay in their homes. Well, you can't have a license because we have a moratorium on granting licenses for home care. What? We have a moratorium on licensing home care agencies. Oh, I see. You require a license to offer a service that older people are clamoring and desperate for, but you aren't granting any of said licenses. That's correct.

New York State deserves what it gets.

Bear Advice

A funny comment from another blog about camping near bears:

"The Park Service says just attach small bells to your shoes to warn the bears you are in their territory. You will know when to do this because you'll see bear spoor with little bells in it."

Luke's a Nuke!

Luke had his interviews today in Washington (including one with a 4-star Admiral) to become a Naval Reactors Engineer -- and he made it! This is quite an honor and hotly competed-for among the best of the Navy's engineers. It means that he'll be living in Washington, D.C. and working at the headquarters of the Navy's nuclear reactors program for most of his Navy tour. Congratulations, Luke -- we're proud of you!

A Valentine's Day Limerick

There was a young lassie named Cassie.
The laddies thought she was quite sassy.
But there was a guy
With a discerning eye,
Who said, "She's classy! And, oh, what a chassis!"

SNOWPOCALYPSE

Unfortunately I didn't take any pictures of all of the snow. But this video was taken right outside of my house! Or actually right around the corner.

Truck Day!

...was yesterday. But still! Baseball season is close!

Congratulations to Kate

who was matched to an internship in Brooklyn for next year at the Veterinary Emergency and Referral Group. Good going, and good luck with the house hunting and, for Caleb, job hunting that comes next!

Happy Birthday, Blog!

Five years ago . . .

Luke was a junior in high school

Laura was a freshman at Geneseo

Caleb was living in Amherst Ithaca [Ed.: I knew that! Really!!]

Mouse was relaxed

and Panda loved the snow.

We did get a couple of favorite-post nominations. Laura likes Dad's Valentine's Day posts. (So do I.) And Luke likes Stuff on our Dog.

How could you not?

This blog has been a kind of substitute family hearth as we've spread out farther and farther away from the real one. It gets harder to keep it up as everyone gets deeper into their Real Lives. But let's not stop, okay?
