Great quote, and I love Julian Simon's optimism and tend to have a similar stance, but I think he makes one mistake. People have not always had the attitude that many of them have today, "that the conditions of life are getting worse." It is an attitude that in this country is a recent development, but that has been in the works, starting with philosophers, for a couple hundred years. It's the same attitude that was dominant during the Dark Ages, and that has been dominant in Russia for hundreds of years. In Russia, they say that life is futile, and sure enough, in Russia, it is.
My point is that we need more Julian Simons, and less of the types who say life is getting worse. If those types get their way, then life certainly will get worse; it's a self-fulfilling prophecy.

That's apropos of nothing.
I'm expecting the ingenuity of man, particularly in the fields of agriculture and energy to overcome these latest difficulties of high food and energy prices. I think it could be difficult especially if we face a cooling period at the same time. It will be a real test of the scarcity leads to cornucopia theory. I can't believe that people are having trouble heating their homes and we won't go put a few pinpricks in the vast wilderness fo Alsaka in an attempt to remove some of the pressure.

I'm not the least bit worried about anything that nature can throw at us. I'm worried about the man-haters. Ultimately, however, they're just a bunch of weaklings, and there are a lot of incredibly intelligent people on man's side. Just watch, a second renaissance is coming.
I'm not worried about nature long-term. I'm worried about it short-term. It's the scarcity that begets the plenty. The convergence of several factors could make the scarcity temporarily painful for those who are already on the edge.
