Red Sox

OK. What's the roster gonna be? 25 players. Ortiz, Varitek, and Kotteras take it down to 22. Four known starters: Beckett, Dice-K, Lester, Wake. 18 left. Five infielders: Youk, Destroia, Lowrie, Lugo (supposed to be ready in the first week), and Lowell. 13. OF: Bay, Ellsbury, Drew. 10. Relievers: Little Papi, Delcarmen, Masterson, Okajima. 6 left. One starter, two OFs, two relievers, one other? Pick from Baldelli, Kotsay, Buchholz, Lopez, Ramirez, Penny, Saito, Smoltz, Carter, Van Every? Who's staying? Who's going? I haven't paid enough attention to know.

And what happened to "The Mayor"? And what's his real name?

The Mayor (Sean Casey) retired. I liked having him around, but the Sox barely used him last year.

Saito's definitely going.

Smoltz will start the season on the DL. Buchholz, despite his hot spring, will start in AAA, with either Penny or Masterson filling the 5th rotation slot. If there are no major injuries by the time Smoltz is ready to go, a pitcher will probably be traded for a catcher, 1B, or a shortstop (if Lowrie or Lowell are struggling).

Otherwise, I'd have to guess they'll bring Baldelli (crushed a HR off of Liriano today) and Carter (great spring, but a really lousy defender). The Sox love Lopez, so he'll go. Ramirez probably will too. I think that's everyone (Penny, Saito, Baldelli, Ramirez, Lopez, Carter).

I follow the spring training games but I haven't paid too much attention to the young guys. I'm most interested in who the 5th starter is going to be. I hope they leave Buchholz in AAA for now. He has had a great spring but he needs to be completely confident before making another attempt at the majors.

Caleb did you see that channel 17 is playing the phillies vs. red sox game tomorrow at 1?

The fifth starter won't be Masterson, per the globe.

Doesn't Kotsay play first, too? I don't see a back-up first baseman anywhere, except Ortiz, and they've always seemed reluctant to play him there once in a while.

Eight days to OD?

Carter would be the backup 1B, allowing Youk to shift to 3B if Lowell was out. He's a defensive butcher, but he sure can hit. Kotsay's decent defensively, though 1B isn't really his position, but he can't hit a lick anymore.

Green and Carter make the team. Not sure where they're fitting Green in, but I like it for now.

Reading this thread really makes me want to be back in the US.

Sure looks to me like OD will be rained out. How stupid is it to play BRS vs. TBR on opening day in Boston?

And speaking of stupid MLB, I tried to watch the RS vs. the Mets on Saturday. Blacked out. MLB, making sure fans can't see their product.
