The Energy-Saving Fallacy

There are ads on the radio, paid with tax dollars, exhorting us to save some energy for tomorrow. What's your excuse, they demand to know. Well, suppose, for a second, by shivering more, and staying home more, we could manage to conserve 5% of the energy we would use in a year. And suppose we could do that for 20 years. Ignoring compounding and use growth and other variables, we would have just turned 20 years of energy into 21 years of energy. The planet is saved!

The paradox of energy is that the more we use the more we have. The planet is a limitless source of energy and the only good reason not to use it is if you can't afford it.

The ultimate resource, and the only one that matters, is the human mind. I am ALWAYS telling people that they need to go look up Julian Simon. Do you know that almost everything he ever wrote is online for free at www.juliansimon.com?

Also, Dad have you been to the Carousel Mall at all recently? I will never go again, unless for some reason I REALLY need to, and I suggest you avoid it. The "green scene" there is truly horrifying.

It's everywhere. I was thoroughly enjoying watching Jack Bauer torture people last night when, in the middle of things, the asshole who plays him started blabbing about all they are doing on the set to help ward off climate change. Dope.

Gullible just isn't in the dictionary. Neither is stupid.
