1)It breaks your heart.
It is designed to break your heart.
The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone.
You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops.
Today, it stopped, and summer was gone.

"I'm a firm believer that God has a plan and it wasn't in his plan for us to move forward. God didn't have it in the cards for us... For me, I'm a firm believer in God and God has a plan and it wasn't in God's plan for us to be in the playoffs." -- Adrian Gonzalez
That's a joke, right? I don't think you could be any more pathetic than that.
Ortiz is a little more of a grownup. Instead of blaming it on God, he said, “We’re not a playoff team. The Rays deserved it and we didn’t. You can’t say we were a good team.”
Essentially, he picked Caleb's choice (b).
"When it finally hits you what happened, that we blew it, you start thinking about every game you played, start thinking about all those games you gave away. You don't really second-guess yourself. You just think about all those little things. It's an empty, horrible feeling."-Willie Randolph, Manager of the 2007 New York Mets
I got that quote from Jesse. He says his Mets fandom has never been the same since that 2007 season, in which the Mets did basically the exact same thing in September that the Red Sox did this year.
Gonzalez has also now blamed the schedule and injuries. He is rapidly losing my respect.

Grandpa Murphy didn't call them the Red Flops for nothing.
Honestly, I mostly just feel bad for these guys. Papelbon was having a career year; he struck out the first 2 batters in the 9th. Sometimes you just get hit. I'm sure the whole thing was really traumatic for him and I hope he is able to mentally recover from it.
Scutaro was incredible down the stretch, getting big hits left and right and making incredible plays in the field. The double play he started on Wednesday and the play where he threw out Reynolds at home were awesome. It's not his fault that he couldn't see whether or not the ball was caught in the 8th inning. If that play is anybody's fault, it's the third base coach for sending him.
And then there is Ellsbury, of course, who had by far his best season, might win MVP, had multiple clutch hits in the last few games, and in the end it's all for naught.
I'm just sad. I enjoyed watching these guys so much until this last month, and I NEVER thought that they wouldn't make it, up until I saw it with my own eyes. And now Francona is taking the fall. How on earth will we find a manager as good as Francona? Joe Maddon is already taken.
