Red Sox?

I've just been catching up on the Red Sox, sounds like we've had some exciting baseball lately. Two dramatic comeback wins against the Yankees and a nine-game win streak. Youkilis is leading the league in runs and has an AVG/OBP/SLG of .444/.551/.794. Those are Barry Bonds numbers! And Jason Bay is doing great as well at .309/.480/.655.

So what do those of you who have actually been able to watch some of the season so far think of the team this year?

I miss baseball.

Well, it's all good pretty much. Youk is off to a great start, and you've got to like the pitching depth and bullpen.

The Yankees just seem to make mistake after mistake. Their bullpen is awful. They have a bunch of mediocre players that they pay big money to like Damon and Matsui. But it's too early to count them out, of course.

That said, there is a waning of the magic. It's no longer a matter of life and death. i can die happy as far as the Red Sox are concerned. Also, there is no more lonely Red Sox fan mystique. It's a cult for crissakes.

Friday night's game was especially pleasurable because I got to watch it on YES with Kay, Flaherty, and Cone. Just the best baseball talk anywhere, and perfectly fair to the Red Sox. and no promos.

Satruday, McCarver said the two most important elements of hitting are waiting and fast hands.

OK, I just saw Jacoby Ellsbury steal home. Great moment. The ESPN cameras almost entirely missed it. The only reason you knew anything was happening was that Jon Miller started yelling something incomprehensible, and then Ellsbury flew across the screen. In the next half-inning Ellsbury was standing in the outfield with just the slightest hint of a grin on his face. You could tell he was still thinking about it. Hunter Jones (who?) pitched the next inning beautifully.

All to say that this is what is special about the Red Sox: Youkilis, Pedroia (for a couple of years we'd hear that the REAl hot prospect of the RS was Pedrioa), Ellsbury, Papelbon, Masterson(wow!), Lowrie, Delcarmen, Lester, Jones, Bowden, Buchholz. Amazing homegrown talent. Hats off to Epstein and company. The anti-Yankees.

Bowden just struck out Jeter.

I haven't seen the game itself yet, but for those in Ireland or who otherwise missed it, mlb.com has a nice article about it with a great video herehere. I particularly like the last image in the video. Can't put pictures into comments so I actually had to edit Luke's original post and put it on the front page -- sorry, Luke!

They blacked out the game on MLB.tv so I missed it. I caught a replay of Ellsbury's steal. It was pretty incredible. The cameras didn't even really catch it. He was pretty much just a white streak coming across the right side of the screen. Awesome.

This has been a great weekend of baseball, but Red Sox/Yankees games are TOO LONG.

In the future, those of us with mlb.tv (and those of us in Ireland) who want to watch the Sunday night ESPN games should check ESPN360.com. I discovered in the 4th last night that ESPN was streaming the game online, and got it up just in time to see the steal. Good stuff.

I'm with dad - the homegrown talent keeps me interested. If I have to walk Hobbes during a baseball game, I usually do it while the Sox are pitching. Last night, I took him out in the bottom of an inning, cause I wanted to get back to watch Bowden pitch again. Our homegrown talent bullpen is better than the Yankees homegrown talent bullpen.

I was watching videos of Ellsbury coming home from 2nd on the passed ball again Joba Chamberlain the other night and thinking "MAN he is fast."

I like J. D. Drew's reaction after the steal. He just stands there and nods his head a little bit, haha. What does it take to get that guy excited?

What does it take to get that guy excited?Grand slams in the postseason?

Although he might just be yawning there, it's hard to tell.
