Yikes.

Does this make sense?

Yes. Pitching is undervalued. Hitting is overvalued.

Also, every team should have an Asian player with whom no one can communicate.

Also, it keeps him away from the MFYs.

Well, the Sox had to do something to recapture their past glory...by which I mean second place in the AL East.

more points:

-51.1M is an investment in the asian market, which is largely untapped by the Sox. Everything I hear about Japanese fans has them familiar (and very interested in) the Yankees and Mariners. Ichiro and Matsui's contracts practically pay for themselves. Matsuzaka's probably won't, but it's a start.

- He could be incredible.

- He's younger, and probably better, than any other pitcher on the market, and the Sox need a good front of the line starter this offseason. He's the best bet.

- He won't be pitching for the Yankees. That's just great.

Speaking of former glory, the Red Sox had some two years ago. The Yankees had some...

last century!

Caleb, I concur that he's the best bet out there, and he may be worth it. The fact that the next-highest bid was $38 million gives me pause, though. It's hard to imagine that the Sox will get $13 million more value out of Matsuzaka than the Mets would have.

According to this Globe article, the Sox will have to share most of the increased revenues, so the direct financial benefit to the Sox of tapping the Asian market is minimal. Which begs the question...why isn't MLB paying some or all of the transfer fee?

The profit sharing in MLB is pretty messed up. The Yankees and Sox keep teams like the Devil Rays alive, but the Devil Rays don't spend their money on talent. Not to mention, yes, MLB should be facilitating this deal, financially.

The Sox bid 13M higher than anyone else, but it was a blind bid, and the Yankees were players, so I figure they just really, really, really wanted to make sure they won.

The only thing that concerns me about this deal, is that South Park says Japanese people have no souls. Do we really want someone with no soul on our baseball team? Hmmmm.....

Is it just the Japanese or is it all Asian people? Ever watch the Korean channel on DTV?
