Start thinking now!

And get your entries in early. What entries? The entries to the Stornaway Farm Thanksgiving Contest. Stornaway Farm is offering prizes for the best "What I'm Thankful For" comment in the comments section of this post. ANYONE can enter. Just hit the comments link and leave a comment that begins "I'm thankful for". The deadline to enter is Wednesday, November 23rd at 11:59PM. The entries should not be excessively lengthy. They may be humorous, or they may be heartfelt. One entry per person. A $20 prize will be awarded to the most humorous, and a $20 prize will be awarded to the most heartfelt. The winners will be determined by a vote of the entrants. Voters may not vote for their own entry. Votes should be mailed to me at murphytc@frontiernet.net by Thursday, November 24th, Thanksgiving, at 11.59AM. Note the times. The winners will be announced by 03:00 PM Thanksgiving. Comments will be allowed in the comments section right along with the entries. Entries will be identified by the first three words. Further clarifications, if necessary, will be made in the comments section. Questions should be asked there, also. Good luck.

What, no entries? No questions? Everyone is thinking or everyone is shy. I'll have to break the ice, I guess. My entry would probably fall in the heartfelt category. BTW, declaring a category is not necessary.

I'm thankful for my mother-in-law and father-in-law for providing me with a sturdy and able wife, and, by God, hasn't she learned a thing or two about cooking over the years, eh?

Hey, the "only one entry per contestant" rule is stifling our creativity! Since there are really two contests going on here (one for the most heartfelt entry, one for the most humorous) Luke and I hereby petition for a change in the rules. We think at least two entries per contestant ought to be allowed, so that we can each try for a humorous one and a heartfelt one, instead of having to decide ahead of time which category to shoot for.

And by the way, here's another incentive to participate, at least for those of you who will be at the Murphies' Thanksgiving dinner table next Thursday: I am planning to do a Ceremonial Reading of the Entries before we eat. That means that those of you who have sent in an entry will not be put on the spot, then and there, to come up with something to be thankful for then and there, the way you usually are. See the advantages of participation??

Rule change: Two entries allowed per person. One may be heartfelt. One may be humorous. We should be able to tell which is which. Read the rules closely! Entries MUST start with the words, "I'm thankful for". Good luck.

I'm thankful for Ralph Nader and Jesse Jackson because they are always looking out for the little guys. You know, little guys like Terrell Owens!

It's amazing that these guys spend so much time helping the disenfranchised, but still can make room in their busy schedules for truely oppressed people like Terrell Owens. By the way, I should get extra votes for putting in links.

"I am thankful for Tom and Edna, and the fact that they
decided (?) to have five kids. And after reading Scott Burns column in
this morning's Globe, I am thankful that Tom was a federal employee and
liked to buy CDs. Mother's income is at the median for retirees over
the age of 65. Half of the retired people in the country are not as
well off as my Mother. "

I'm not sure if this is for non-family members but I just stumbled upon this while writing a speech for stem cell research & cancer and I thought Wow. I'm very thankful for this. How unlike me... a heartfelt comment...I'll have to make a funny one right after.

I am thankful that I have a grandmother who is the strongest woman in the world.

March 21, 2004 I received this e-mail from my grampa:

Sylvia has an 'indolent' lymphoma---first indolent thing I've ever known her to have. Anyway, she noticed a lump at the base of her skull in November, watched it for a while, then had it scraped out a week or so ago. It tested for lymphoma, so blood tests and a CatScan followed. Second opinions confirm the lymphoma and, perhaps, one lymph node. So, when we get back from Costa Rica they'll run another blood test for specific items. Then we'll go from there. Indolence is sometimes a good thing, especially when it implies a very slow moving disease--we don't have to catch the snake before it slithers under the shed. Nothing to get all nervous and jerky about.

Thanksgiving really does get you into this..thankful spirit. Hm.

P.S. I don't even want the prize if I win because it's probably a gallon of milk from the cows out back or beef jerky or something. If it's fifty bucks though...I'm all for it.

HAHAHAHAHAHHA. I'M STIL FUNNY!

I am thankful for so many things that I have been stuck for days, unable to enter this contest because I couldn’t choose just one. Then I was going to post a whole list of things I’m thankful for, but I was afraid that might be considered a sneaky way of trying to get around the one-entry-per-person rule, and THAT might get me in trouble for not reading the instructions. So, I’ve picked just one after all. Here goes.

I am thankful for Thanksgiving. It’s my favorite holiday. As the family gets more and more far-flung each year, it brings us back together again. It’s easy and enjoyable to get ready for – you know exactly what’s needed, it never changes year to year, there’s no anxiety that you might not choose the right thing or it might not arrive in time, it’s fun to stuff a turkey and bake pies and mash potatoes and put cranberry sauce in a pretty dish and light candles, and it’s even more fun to eat the results. An early Thanksgiving morning, with the sky just getting light, the oven preheating so the turkey can go in early, everyone else still asleep, and a sense of peaceful plenitude in the air, is one of the best moments in the year. I like being reminded to be thankful for my husband, who is still making me laugh after 30 years, has great ideas like this contest, and is never boring because you never know what he’ll think of next; for my kids, who will still be making me laugh, I hope, for at least another 30 years; for our amazing extended families on both sides; for our kids’ friends, who add so much richness and interest to our lives; and for the Internet, hot water, Panda, Mouse, books, coffee, warm feet, good health, friends, earrings, the Sherburne-Earlville school system, long underwear, blossoming plants, digital cameras, this blog . . . (don’t you like how I’m sneaking in my list, after all?) Anyway, it’s a great day. The only flaw in the holiday is all those dishes to wash -- and, as the Chinese say, “Better a diamond with a flaw than a pebble without.” Thanksgiving’s a diamond, and I’m thankful to have it.

I'm thankful for my sister Pat for looking out for my mother each and every day. It's the little things she does for her, like wash her hair, bring her hot dogs, or stop by with mom's great granddaughter, that mean so much. Without Pat, Mom would be unbearably lonely. Thank you Pat for doing it all.

I'm thankful for waking up every morning...
By a wife who loves me and whom I love
With a family that is a pleasure to wake up to
In a country that we can love and hate and that still gives us comfort that we will wake up every morning
In a world that circles tirelessly as we grow old and wise and stupid
In a universe that ignores us when we whine
I'm thankful for waking up every morning.

I'm thankful that my exile from Virginia (and all states bordering Virginia) meant that I could chase barn cats, eat woodchucks, and play with Caleb.

Virginia sucks anyway.

Thank you Panda, I'm touched.

I'm thankful dad told me about the garbage cans. I swear they weren't there a month ago.

As long as I'm on the topid of blog features, I'm thankful for the robot blocker. It blocks robots so effectively, we never have to read any comments that we don't want to read.

Except Aurora's.

Ok, campers. Time to vote. The following posters get votes: Dad, Luke, Any Mouse, Aurora, Mom, Laura, Zach, Claire, FaxtheFox, Rocky, Rob, Panda, and Caleb.

Votes must be mailed to murphytc@frontiernet.net by noon. Identify yourself, and vote for one entry in each category. Any questions?

Dad said...

Not an entry: I'm thankful for the Newbolds showing up and saving my contest.

Claire, you are so right about Pat. We should buy HER a cruise.

I'm sorry I know it's too late but I'm posting this anyway!

This year, I'm especially thankful for the fact that I get to go to such a great school district in a great community. Sherburne-Earlville has so many opportunities compared to most rural schools, many of which have been very important to me. From the excellent Odyssey of the Mind program to the Drama Club that has a great director who has taught me a lot, to the soccer team on which I have had more fun than anything else I've ever done. I'm thankful for the great experience I got to have playing soccer this fall on Sherburne-Earlville's most successful soccer team ever. Most of all, I'm thankful for the great S-E community. The entire town gave the team so much support, even the football team who showed up to our final game with "S-E MARAUDERS" painted on their chests. This area has an excess of great people in it and I'm thankful to be a part of it. Oh and I'm thankful for the Red Sox too, especially Curt Schilling and David Ortiz.
