Look what Dad found in 8L!

It was there, all by itself, at five o'clock. Dad and I walked back up there just now, at about 9, and it was still there, curled up in the grass in the middle of the pasture, perfectly content and comfortable and showing no fear. I called Marsha Guzewich at the Rogers Center and she said the rule is "if you care, leave it there." She says this is normal behavior and the mother will come back to it soon. We aren't so sure--the fawn is in a very exposed location in short grass nowhere near the edge of the field; it doesn't seem like a likely place for the mother deer to leave it. But we'll see if it's still there in the morning and, if so, maybe try to contact a wildlife rehabilitator. Panda was very good! Posted by Hello

My Conversation with James Lileks (so far)

Me:
Hey. Been working with cows a long time and have yet to give one a warm, lubricated suppository.

James:
That's what I would say if I was in your line of work, too. ;) Who knew I had cow wranglers in the audience? Thanks for the patronage, Thomas. Lileks

From the man who brought us Sammy Sooser and Manny Ortez...

God, you can't make this stuff up...

"Kennedy also mangled the name of the Democrats' new star, Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, calling him "Osama bin … Osama … Obama."

And on Meet the Press, Howard Dean said, "Osama Bin Laden had nothing to do with the terrorist attacks."

These guys are just trying to be more like W all the time.

If I had a camera...

I'd camera in the morning. Especially this morning, looking out the end of the barn, with the heifers on the hill, the mist rising off the goose-infested pond, and the sunrise of 47 colors above the hill. Soon I'll remember to take the camera out and then I can share. In lieu of that, a favorite poem of Edna Murphy's:

A Summer Scene

We stood at the bars as the sun went down
Behind the hill on a summer day.
Her eyes were tender and big and brown.
Her breath was as sweet as the new-mown hay.

Far from the west, the faint sunshine
Glanced sparkling off her golden hair.
Her calm deep eyes were turned toward mine,
And a look of contentment rested there.

I saw her bathed in the sunlight flood.
I see her standing peacefully now.
Peacefully standing and chewing her cud
As I stroke her ears, that Jersey cow.

She's YOUR mother!

After Johnny Damon got his third hit last night, Don Orsillo screamed, "There's nobody hotter than Johnny Damon!"

Mom said, "That's for sure."

Yeah, but he's OUR idiot...

"I'm at ease with myself, at peace," Damon said. "I know this is a big year for me. Hopefully, the Red Sox can see with me on the team we're going to win a lot more games. Yeah, I do have fun, I do party. I'm not going to play this game and tell my kids I played in the big leagues and went back to my hotel room and did nothing. I'm going to have fun."

Meanwhile, did you know that the player the Yankees threw in with Jeff Weaver in the trade for Kevin Brown is now the Dodgers closer? Of course, I read this in the New York Times so I have no idea if it's true.
