Birds, birds, birds

Within five minutes of arriving at the lake this evening I saw: some ring-necked ducks, a loon, what was probably a merganser but too far away to be certain, two mute swans, a bluebird, a bunch of robins and blackbirds, a pair of geese, and a young bald eagle.  And that's not to mention the kingfisher on the telephone wire on the way up here.  In a month or two, I suppose we'll settle back into a mostly-geese monoculture, but right now this place is a living poster for ornithological diversity.

We had four Eastern Bluebirds hanging out in our yard for a while last month. I tried to get some pictures but all they look like is distant specks. I don't think I'd ever seen bluebirds before and I was pretty impressed. Turns out they're not all that rare anymore. Kinda like bald eagles.

Caleb, I think that the bluebird houses you see everywhere are one reason that bluebird populations have grown. There was quite a movement to put them up around the time we moved to the farm. Having seen the birds both in your yard and ours, we probably both ought to put houses up - though I haven't looked up what the ideal habitat would be.
