The University of Pennsylvania Veterinary School gave Caleb a wonderful birthday present, one day late: he's in!! Earlier this evening, while he was driving home after his interview, he got a cell phone call telling him he had been accepted. Yippee! The UPenn vet school website is here and it sounds like a seriously exciting place.
Start saving up your sick animals now -- we'll have a vet in the family in about 4 1/2 years. Congratulations, Caleb, on a lot of hard work and a huge accomplishment!!!!

Caleb,
Very impressive accomplishment. Congrats and Happy Belated Birthday. We're very happpy for you and not just because "sick animals" is our middle name. Hope you're out having a couple of beers.
Way to go, Caleb. It's good to know that all our hard work has paid off. That they called you two hours after the interview must mean you presented yourself well.
Mom gleaned from the website that they have over 1000 applicants for 45 out-of-state positions. Impressive, indeed.
Course, now the work begins. You think I'm demanding, wait 'til you get to vet school.
You're going to make a great vet. You have a nice way with animals, and with people. It will be fun to watch your progress.
Do they have an accelerated program? I think O'Shea plans to retire in three years.
I'm impressed. You must have wowed 'em! Probably thought anyone who can tend bar in Ithaca can handle animals. Congratulations.
yay caleb!!!!!!!
we're proud of you too! 45 spots out of 1000 applicants... go you! you'll do great. and Philadelphia has the liberty bell!
(and yeah, i read your family's blog. WHAT?)
Ruth and Andrew, we hear that you, too, (or you two??) are entitled to congratulations. Too. Two? Anyway, your engagement was very happy news around here. We wish you many, many happy years together (and we're glad you read the family blog, no matter what Caleb says!)
Caleb was skeptical of my math on the 45-out-of-a-thousand thing, so I feel I should explain where it came from. Here's a paragraph from the "Common Questions" page on the UPenn Vet School web site that lays out the figures:
2) Do PA residents have a better chance of being admitted to PENN Vet?
Yes, at least 60% of our class of 110 students come from PA. Out of our current 1300 applicants, only about 225 are from PA. That leaves over 1000 applicants from outside of PA from which we will take no more than 40% of our class.
Ruth and Andrew-
Don't forget cheesesteak!
It's like a little New York!
And they have the Liberty Bell!
There's a lot, a lot of culture here.
Thanks, everyone, for the congratulations. I'm very excited. The doctor who interviewed me told me that he still has no idea why Penn admitted him, and looking at those admissions statistics, I don't either!
So I guess I'll have to start cheering for the Phillies.
Dont they have pretzels, too?
YAY congratulations Caleb! And happy birthday.
